International Reef Clean Up 2008 - Pattaya, Thailand
20th September 2008 saw the repeat of a very special annual event - the Project AWARE International Reef and Beach Clean Up Day. (See the 2007 Reef/Beach Cleanup effort). Year on year larger amounts of divers and non-divers alike participate in this very important and rewarding conservation and education event. This is massively encouraging on many levels. Not only are there more physical hands to assist in clearing more unwanted matter from beaches and seas globally. It also displays the increasing importance placed on conservation efforts and the fact that awareness is increasingly heightened. It's always very encouraging to see expats, holiday divers and indeed locals turn out for the beach and reef conservation event. Cleaning an area is one thing but education as to why this conservation effort is undertaken is equally if not more important - certainly long-term. Mermaids Dive Center are very pleased to see a record turn out for the Pattaya 2008 effort. Nearly 2 decades in operation as a dive facility and the 20th September 2008 Project AWARE Cleanup was the busiest day in the dive centers' history with 176 participants. All went incredibly smoothly with a superb day had by all and a great party and raffle prize draw in the evening. 154,562 baht (Approx $5000) was raised for Project AWARE! Documenting the International Clean Up Day and the party in the evening shall take several pages. Please do enjoy the pictures and the texts through the web links below: |
